The government has handed over disbursement orders of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each of the seven deceased individuals, as announced by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
Labour and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, accompanied by officials from the district administration, personally visited the victims’ houses and delivered the sanctioned memo. Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund has declared an ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased families and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured persons. These funds will be disbursed to the victims shortly.
The tragic incident occurred when a chariot caught fire after coming into contact with a high-voltage electricity line on the National Highway during the procession of Phera Rath, symbolizing the return of Lord Jagannath. Seven individuals, including three children, lost their lives on the spot, while 20 others sustained serious injuries.
While the opposition demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, alleging a local BJP MLA for forcing the unauthorized movement of the chariot on the highway, the Tripura government has ordered a magisterial inquiry. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation is also carrying out a separate investigation.
An FIR has been lodged against the organizer of the procession by the brother of one of the victims. However, no individuals have been questioned yet in this regard.
