Trinidad’s Cruise Season Poised for Significant Growth

Trinidad’s upcoming cruise season is expected to bring another significant boost to the industry, with an estimated 82% increase in passengers compared to the previous season. According to Tourism Trinidad, approximately 88,000 passengers and 30,000 crew members are projected to visit the shores of Trinidad, ushering in economic prosperity, cultural enrichment, and numerous opportunities for local businesses.

Traditionally, the cruise season in Trinidad begins in November and runs until April of the following year. However, this year’s season is set to begin earlier with the arrival of the first vessel, Seabourn Pursuit, on October 11, 2023. Notably, there will be ten inaugural visits and five new cruise lines, including Seabourn, Ex Polaris, Victoria Cruises, Silver Seas Cruises, and Salen Ship Management Company.

The previous cruise season showcased the remarkable potential of Trinidad’s cruise industry, with a total of 48,243 passengers arriving via 29 calls at the Cruise Ship Complex in Port-of-Spain. The economic impact was undeniable, as passengers disembarked and spent an average of US$43 per person. They engaged in various activities such as shopping for local crafts, savoring the island’s culinary delights, and exploring its vibrant cultural heritage. This influx of spending power generated substantial revenue for local businesses, invigorating sectors such as retail, hospitality, transportation, and entertainment, and contributing to Trinidad’s overall economic growth.

Tourism Trinidad CEO Carla Cupid emphasized that the cruise season created flourishing employment opportunities for local guides, tour operators, taxi drivers, craft vendors, and service personnel. This surge in employment not only provided income for individuals but also fostered skills development and contributed to the growth of the local tourism sector.

Cultural exchange was a highlight of the previous season, with visitors immersing themselves in Trinidad’s vibrant festivals, traditional music, and food. The downstream benefits of the cruise industry extended beyond tourism, stimulating various sectors of the economy. Local businesses in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation experienced increased demand for their products and services, as cruise ships were supplied with local produce, seafood, and other vital items. This collaboration fosters economic diversification and contributes to the overall growth and resilience of Trinidad’s economy.

As the 2023 to 2024 cruise season approaches, Trinidad is ready to welcome passengers seeking an unforgettable journey. Building on the successes of the previous season, Destination Trinidad is poised to deliver an exceptional experience, highlighting the island’s unparalleled natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. With each passing season, Trinidad solidifies its position as a premier cruise destination, offering a gateway to exploration and discovery for travelers from around the world.
