In a shocking incident ahead of Lok Sabha Elections, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader named Satyan Chowdhury was shot dead by unidentified assailants in West Bengal’s Baharampur on Sunday. The attack was carried out by a group of individuals on bikes who opened fire at close range.
According to sources, the assailants fired three rounds at Satyan Chowdhury near an under-construction multi-storey building in Baharampur. Although he was rushed to a hospital for treatment, he was declared dead on arrival. The police have already initiated an investigation into the murder and are examining CCTV footage of the area to identify the attackers.
Amidst the tragedy, Baharampur Municipality Chairman Nadugopal Mukhopadhyay alleged that Congress and CPM-backed miscreants were responsible for the murder, claiming that the TMC wanted to create unrest ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, Murshidabad district CPM secretary Jamir Mollah denied these allegations, suggesting that the killing was a result of internal strife within the TMC.
Satyan Chowdhury, who had previously been close to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, had switched allegiances to the ruling TMC. As of now, the motive behind his murder remains unknown and is yet to be ascertained.
The political situation in West Bengal has been tense recently, with frequent incidents of violence and clashes between different parties. Just earlier this year, on January 4, the body of a Trinamool worker was found in West Bhaganbari village of Khejuri, leading to protests and roadblocks by TMC workers in Baratala and Kalgechia areas.
This unfortunate incident adds to the growing concern over the escalating violence in West Bengal, which has become a major talking point in the run-up to the Lok Sabha Elections. As investigations proceed, the state authorities will need to address this issue urgently to ensure the safety and security of political leaders and the general populace.
