The trial run of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Ludhiana’s zone-D parking area has failed to yield the desired results, as only one car utilized the facility in 45 days. The municipal corporation and private company Tata Projects are disappointed with the low turnout and attribute it to the charging station’s location and lack of awareness among the public.
The EV charging station was installed on May 22 by Tata Projects for a one-month-long free trial. However, only one vehicle availed of the charging facility during this period. Despite the low usage, Tata Projects remains optimistic and willing to install the EV stations at other locations if granted permission by the civic body.
A senior representative from Tata Projects acknowledged that the concept of EV charging stations is relatively new and requires time for people to understand and embrace. He suggested that parking lots and petrol pumps would be more suitable locations for such stations.
The representative emphasized the importance of encouraging electric vehicles due to their environmental benefits. He suggested that the municipal corporation should acquire e-vehicles for its officers to set an example.
MC commissioner Shena Aggarwal stated that the trial run was intended to gauge the response. The corporation has other plans in the pipeline to foster a cleaner environment.
Local residents are also advocating for the establishment of charging points at parking lots and other public places. They believe that wider accessibility would encourage more people to use electric vehicles, especially if incentivized by special benefits from the government.
Despite the limited success of the trial run, there is hope that the recent approval of the EV policy for Ludhiana district by the state government will pave the way for the development of necessary infrastructure. Providing adequate charging facilities is crucial for the successful adoption of electric vehicles.
In conclusion, the trial run of an EV charging station in Ludhiana has faced challenges due to its location and limited awareness among the public. However, stakeholders, including Tata Projects and local residents, remain optimistic that with the right infrastructure and incentives, the use of electric vehicles can be promoted effectively. Municipal authorities continue to explore options to create a clean and sustainable environment for the city.
