San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has teamed up with Animal Care Services (ACS) to provide travelers with helpful tips for traveling with pets this summer. With an expected busy Fourth of July weekend, SAT wants to ensure that all passengers, including those with furry companions, have a smooth and stress-free travel experience.

To start, SAT advises travelers to arrive at least two hours in advance of their boarding times, print or download their boarding passes early, and track their flight status online. These simple steps can help passengers avoid any last-minute rush or delays.

When it comes to navigating through security checkpoints with pets, being prepared is key. Patricia Mancha, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself with the screening procedures in order to clear security quickly and easily. Owners should remember to remove their pets from their carriers before the screening process begins. Empty carriers can then be placed on the conveyor belt while the pets are either carried or leashed. TSA officers will conduct an explosive trace detection swab of the owner’s hands to ensure there is no residue, enhancing security measures. Once the screening process is complete, pets should be safely returned to their travel carriers at the designated re-composure area away from the security checkpoint. This not only ensures the safety of the pets but also maintains a smoother flow for other passengers.

Lisa Norwood, the public relations manager for ACS, also offers additional travel tips for pet owners. She advises ensuring that pets have properly fitting collars, tags, and microchips with cellphone numbers. A clean bill of health from a veterinarian, along with any necessary calming medications, is crucial. It’s also important to pack a copy of the pet’s health records, including vaccinations. Bringing a collapsible bowl for food and water, any required medications or supplements, and a secure, comfortable crate with all necessary supplies can further ensure a comfortable journey for pets. Norwood also suggests maintaining familiar routines, such as walks and feeding times, to provide a sense of familiarity amidst the traveling experience. Including a favorite blanket, toys, or an item with the owner’s scent, such as a T-shirt, can help to calm nervous pets.

It is also recommended that travelers familiarize themselves with their airline’s specific pet-related restrictions and requirements. Each airline may have different regulations and guidelines in place, so being aware of these beforehand can help avoid any surprises or complications during travel.

By following these tips and guidelines, pet owners can ensure a stress-free traveling experience for both themselves and their furry friends. The partnership between SAT and ACS aims to provide travelers with the necessary information and guidance to make their journeys as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

As summer travel ramps up, it’s important for pet owners to stay informed and prepared. Taking the time to plan ahead and knowing what to expect can make all the difference when traveling with pets. So, whether it’s a trip to San Antonio or any other destination, remember to prioritize the well-being and comfort of your furry companions. Happy travels!
