Tragic Landslide in Chamba District: 7 Killed, 4 Injured as Vehicle Plunges into Siul River
In a devastating incident in Chamba district, seven people lost their lives and four sustained injuries when the vehicle they were traveling in fell into the Siul River after being hit by a landslide. The accident occurred near the Tarwai Bridge in the Churah area of Chamba district, leaving the locals in shock and disbelief.
According to officials, the ill-fated vehicle was carrying eleven individuals and was on its way from Bairagarh to Tissa when the tragedy took place. As the vehicle approached the Tarwai Bridge, a massive boulder struck it from above, causing it to lose balance and plunge into the river. The impact was catastrophic, with lives snatched away in an instant.
Tragically, among the deceased are six police personnel from the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion posted at the Chamba Border. Identified as Rakesh Gora, Praveen Tondon, Kamaljeet, Sachin, Abhishek, and Lakshay Kumar, these brave individuals dedicated their lives to serving and protecting their community. The seventh victim, Chandru Ram, hailed from the local area.
The news of the accident sent shockwaves throughout the district, prompting Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to express his deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He directed the district authorities to provide immediate ex-gratia to the families of the deceased and ensure the best possible treatment for the injured individuals. The chief minister recognizes the need for swift and comprehensive action to alleviate the suffering caused by this tragic event.
Meanwhile, opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a high-level inquiry into the accident. MLA from Churah, Hans Raj, lamented that despite their previous efforts to close the road due to safety concerns, the current government decided to reopen it. He called for strict action to be taken against the negligent Public Works Department (PWD) officer whose actions resulted in such a high loss of life.
The incident adds to the growing toll from rain-related incidents and road accidents in Himachal Pradesh this monsoon season. Since June 24, a total of 234 individuals have lost their lives due to these unfortunate events. Landslides accounted for 39 fatalities, while road accidents claimed the lives of 97 individuals. The state emergency operation centre warns that heavy rains are expected on August 12 and 13, extending the threat of landslides, flash floods, and increased water flow in rivers and canals until August 17.
As the community grapples with this heartbreaking incident, it is crucial that authorities take measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. The demand for a high-level inquiry into the tragedy aims to ensure accountability and prevent any further loss of precious lives on the treacherous roads of the Chamba district.
