Amid rising tomato prices in Tamil Nadu, the state government has taken measures to control the situation and provide relief to consumers. Tamil Nadu Minister of Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, Periyakaruppan, announced that tomatoes would be sold at Rs.68 per kilogram in Farm Fresh Outlets (FFOs) across the state.

The decision comes after the advice of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to curb the soaring tomato prices. The FFOs, which operate under the Co-operative Department, will sell tomatoes at the reduced price to help stabilize the market and prevent hoarding. The move aims to alleviate the burden on the poor and middle-class sections of society.

Minister Periyakaruppan said that steps are being taken to ensure the availability of tomatoes at Rs.60 per kilogram in FFOs. The initiative will initially cover several major cities in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Tuticorin, Thiruvannamalai, Thirunelveli, Tanjore, Thirupur, and Vellore.

The minister explained that the reduction in tomato supply and high-temperature farming have resulted in the price increase. Chennai’s Koyambedu Market, which usually receives around 800 tons of tomatoes, is now only receiving 300 tons due to the supply shortage. As a result, prices have surged from 90 to 100 per kilogram.

However, Minister Periyakaruppan reassured the public that the price hike of tomatoes is temporary, and efforts are underway to stabilize the situation promptly. The government aims to ensure that tomatoes remain affordable for all consumers.

By implementing this measure, the Tamil Nadu government hopes to alleviate the financial burden on households that heavily rely on tomatoes in their daily cooking. The move is a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring the availability and affordability of essential commodities.

It is important to remember that market fluctuations and supply challenges can have a significant impact on the prices of commodities. Such measures provide temporary relief to consumers and help maintain stability in the market.

The government’s intervention in this matter reflects its responsiveness to the needs of the people and its dedication to addressing their concerns. The reduced price of tomatoes in Farm Fresh Outlets will undoubtedly provide much-needed relief to consumers, especially the vulnerable sections of society.

Consumers can now look forward to purchasing tomatoes at an affordable rate, thanks to the government’s proactive approach. This initiative emphasizes the government’s commitment to mitigating the impact of market fluctuations and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

Overall, the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to sell tomatoes at Rs.68 per kilogram in Farm Fresh Outlets is a step in the right direction. It showcases the government’s efforts to address the rising prices of essential commodities and prioritize the welfare of its citizens.
