The initiative will initially cover several major cities in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Tuticorin, Thiruvannamalai, Thirunelveli, Tanjore, Thirupur, and Vellore.
The minister explained that the reduction in tomato supply and high-temperature farming have resulted in the price increase. Chennai’s Koyambedu Market, which usually receives around 800 tons of tomatoes, is now only receiving 300 tons due to the supply shortage. As a result, prices have surged from 90 to 100 per kilogram.
However, Minister Periyakaruppan reassured the public that the price hike of tomatoes is temporary, and efforts are underway to stabilize the situation promptly. The government aims to ensure that tomatoes remain affordable for all consumers.
