Toledo’s Curtis Johnson is the only football player in history to have played for both an undefeated college and an undefeated NFL team. Johnson was a captain for the undefeated Toledo Rockets in 1969, after which he went on to play for the Miami Dolphins for nine years. Legendary coach Don Shula selected Johnson in the fourth round of the 1970 NFL draft.
The Dolphins became the only team in NFL history to complete a perfect season, going undefeated during their 1972 season. Johnson won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Dolphins, cementing his place in football history.
In 1977, Johnson was inducted into the University of Toledo Hall of Fame. Johnson went to Waite High School in Toledo, where he played football, but unfortunately wasn’t able to go undefeated while on the team.
At 75 years old, Johnson’s athletic achievements continue to inspire young footballers, and he remains a hero in Toledo, his hometown. Johnson’s history-making success is a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.
It’s worth noting that this achievement is one that few, if any, athletes can claim, making Johnson an exceptional player in football history. Johnson’s determination, talent, and hard work have clearly inspired and impressed many, earning him a place among Toledo’s greatest athletes.
In an era that is highly competitive and with modern technology changing the game, we can only wonder if any other football player will reach this exclusive goal. Johnson remains part of an elite group and will always be remembered for his unique accomplishments on both a college and NFL level.
