TOLEDO, Ohio – The city of Toledo is calling all aspiring young leaders to apply for the annual Kid Mayor and Council program. Designed to provide students with an immersive experience in civic operations, this opportunity is open to fourth graders enrolled in Toledo Public Schools and Washington Local Schools.
During the application period, which runs from January 8 to 22, students must inquire with their teacher about applying. If selected, these young visionaries will get the chance to present their ideas to elected officials on how to make Toledo a better place for future generations.
This year’s Kid Mayor will follow in the footsteps of Gabby Mukiira from Grove Patterson Elementary, who held the position in 2023. Gabby’s predecessor, Evelyn Bush of Glenwood Elementary, served as the inaugural Kid Mayor. Both young leaders worked alongside a 12-person Kid Council, gaining valuable insights into the different city departments and the daily operations of Toledo.
The Kid Mayor and Council program has received positive feedback from students and parents alike. It offers young individuals a platform to make a real impact on their community and develop essential leadership skills from an early age.
The city of Toledo recognizes the importance of nurturing a new generation of leaders who are passionate about democracy and dedicated to effecting positive change. By engaging students in local government and empowering them to share their ideas, Toledo is fostering a sense of civic responsibility and encouraging active participation in community affairs.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to support eligible fourth graders in the application process. This interactive program not only educates young minds about how their city works but also inspires them to become engaged citizens who contribute to the betterment of Toledo.
Join the ranks of the future leaders by applying for the Kid Mayor and Council program. Let your child’s voice be heard and watch them make a difference in Toledo’s vibrant and thriving community.
