Tatsu Aoki, the accomplished musician, composer, and arts executive, is set to mark the 20th anniversary of ‘Taiko Legacy’ with a series of concerts in Chicago. Born and raised in Tokyo, Aoki began his musical journey as a 4-year-old, learning the ancient art of Japanese percussion and the shamisen. Now, at the age of 65, he continues to celebrate and share his passion for music and culture with audiences worldwide.

The forthcoming concerts, Reduction 9 and Taiko Legacy 20, are highly anticipated events that attract fans from all walks of life. Reduction 9 will feature a diverse lineup of artists from around the globe, including Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. Combining improvisational music, movement, and traditional Japanese instrumentation, this event promises to deliver a unique and experimental experience.

The pinnacle of the anniversary celebrations, Taiko Legacy 20, will showcase an extensive cast of local artists, as well as special guests from Japan. A spectacular display of taiko drumming, this concert is the culmination of years of dedication and community-building by Aoki and his team. It has become one of the largest community-based taiko performances in the Midwest, captivating audiences with its enchanting rhythms and powerful performances.

Reflecting on the significance of Taiko Legacy, Aoki shared, We’ve reached the point where Taiko Legacy has become as wide as we can do. We have so many musicians, shamisen players from Japan, dancers from Japan, all these others. We have a lot of mini performances and interludes between the songs. We have to map it all out. And we have to talk to our Japanese dancing people about their costume changes so we can create invisible transitions.

This anniversary year has been momentous for Aoki, who achieved a long-held goal in May. Under his leadership as executive director, Asian Improv aRts Midwest purchased a permanent home in Chicago. The building, located on the border of Albany Park and Mayfair, now serves as a hub for various arts groups, including Aoki’s Tsukasa Taiko drumming troupe and Shubukai, dedicated to Japanese classical dancing.

Aoki’s passion for artistic expression began back in Tokyo, where he immersed himself in the underground arts scene of the 1970s. Inspired by American experimental films and Black avant-garde music, Aoki embarked on a journey to the United States in 1977. Chicago, known for its vibrant jazz and avant-garde music scene, became his chosen destination. Since then, Aoki’s contributions to the city’s cultural landscape have been immeasurable.

Today, Aoki and his wife reside in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. Their three grown children, all taiko drummers themselves, often join them on stage, showcasing the beauty and tradition of ethnic folk arts. Taiko Legacy, however, extends far beyond just family involvement. Aoki collaborates with a wide network of talented artists, including renowned local musicians and choreographer-performers, to create unforgettable experiences for audiences.

With Taiko Legacy reaching its 20th year, Aoki feels fortunate to continue collaborating with outstanding artists. Rika Lin, also known as Yoshinojo Fujima, a grandmaster of Fujima-style classical dance, expressed her gratitude for being part of the Legacy shows, saying, It’s a uniquely challenging and gratifying experience.

As Aoki and his team prepare for the milestone concert series, the excitement and anticipation are palpable. Taiko Legacy has become a cultural phenomenon, a testament to Aoki’s lifelong dedication to art and community. Through the universal language of music, he bridges cultures and generations, inspiring audiences around the world.

For those who cherish the Taiko Legacy or are eager to experience this vibrant celebration for the first time, the upcoming Reduction 9 and Taiko Legacy 20 concerts are a must-see. Be prepared to be captivated by the power, passion, and artistry that Tatsu Aoki and his collaborators bring to the stage, as they bang the drums in celebration of two decades of musical excellence.
