Tamil Nadu Law Minister Urges Governor to Approve Pending Bills and Prosecute Ex-Ministers

Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathy has written a letter to Governor R. N. Ravi, urging him to provide his assent without further delay for 13 pending Bills. The Minister also requested the Governor’s sanction to prosecute certain former AIADMK Ministers who are facing corruption charges.

According to an official release on Wednesday, Mr. Regupathy highlighted in his letter that the Legislative Assembly has passed 13 Bills that are awaiting the Governor’s assent. Among these Bills, two have been pending for over three years.

The letter also emphasized that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged former Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar and former Commercial Taxes Minister B.V. Ramana in the gutkha scam. The State Cabinet forwarded the CBI’s prosecution request to the Governor’s Office on September 12, 2022. However, no response has been received, resulting in a significant delay in taking further action on the case, as mentioned in Mr. Regupathy’s letter.

Similarly, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has sought the Governor’s sanction to prosecute former Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration K.C. Veeramani, as well as former Transport Minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar. The State Cabinet forwarded these requests to the Governor’s office on September 12, 2022 and March 15, 2023, respectively. Unfortunately, these requests have been pending with the Raj Bhavan ever since, according to the letter.

The Law Minister expressed disappointment that the Governor has not yet granted necessary sanction to prosecute these former ministers on corruption charges.

It is crucial for the Governor to promptly address these pending issues, assent to the Bills, and provide sanction for the prosecution of the former AIADMK Ministers. This will not only uphold the rule of law but also demonstrate the commitment of the Tamil Nadu government to combat corruption effectively.

The efforts taken by the Law Minister to ensure the progress of these Bills and the prosecution of corrupt former ministers play a vital role in maintaining transparency and accountability in the state’s governance.
