Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in relation to an alleged school jobs scam in West Bengal. Banerjee, who is also the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, arrived at the ED office in Kolkata in the morning.
According to an ED official, Banerjee has been summoned to provide evidence regarding the irregularities in school recruitment. The officials are also expected to question him about his involvement in the scam. Banerjee’s absence from the opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A’s coordination committee meeting in Delhi was noted.
During the questioning, the ED officials focused on Banerjee’s association with ‘Leaps and Bounds,’ the company allegedly implicated in the scam. They inquired about his role and whether he still held the position of director. The questioning is ongoing and will continue until the officers are satisfied with the information provided.
Meanwhile, Banerjee submitted a supplementary affidavit to the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, arguing that the fresh summons issued by the ED is legally flawed since his revisional application challenging the previous summons is still pending. The affidavit stated that Banerjee has contested the entire investigation against him and the previous summonses issued by the agency in his revisional application to the court.
Banerjee further alleged that the ED is engaged in a fishing expedition to implicate him in the alleged teacher recruitment scam. The ED’s investigation is considered to be a wide-ranging inquiry aimed at involving Banerjee in the case.
