The West Bengal government has allegedly diverted funds from the Construction Workers’ Welfare Fund’s (CWWF) to assist the victims of a train crash in the state of Odisha. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government argues that the 103 victims from West Bengal, as well as those presently hospitalised, are eligible for support under the CWWF’s remit. Still, others view the move as inappropriate and have threatened legal action against the state’s government. The CWWF has more than Rs 3,712 crore in its corpus, which covers education provisions and maternity benefits for female workers. However, the construction workers’ union president for the region, Debanjan Chakraborty, has accused the government of misusing funds and upsetting the balance of priorities. A political commentator has stated that the train crash disaster reveals the state’s difficult economic position, with reports of mass migration of daily wagers seeking employment in other states.
