Debris believed to belong to a submersible that was searching for the famous shipwreck, Titanic, has been found by divers in close proximity to the wreckage. The U.S. Coast Guard made the announcement on Thursday afternoon, revealing that the debris was consistent with equipment belonging to the OceanGate vessel, known as the Titan. Sadly, all five individuals that were onboard are thought to have died as a result of a catastrophic loss of pressure in the chamber.
The Titan was owned by a company based in Washington, and its occupants on its final journey included a British adventurer, Hamish Harding, a Titanic expert, a Pakistani businessman, his teenage son, and a pilot. The Titan was capable of reaching depths of up to 13,123 feet and a speed of three knots in the water.
It is not yet clear what caused the catastrophic implosion, but the OceanGate team is committed to finding out through a thorough investigation. This marks the end of the Titan’s journey and the loss of five valuable lives. The diving community is both shocked and saddened by the news.
