Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait stated that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, BJP’s Kaiserganj MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, did not deserve to be called a ‘Thakur’ but just a ‘criminal’ who misused his position and sexually assaulted women wrestlers. Tikait made these statements in an interview with the Times of India, where he negated the rumors suggesting that Agricultural protests led by the BKU were due to a Thakur versus Jat narrative in west UP. The focus of the protest was on a man, Singh, who misused his position to harass women. Tikait went on to say that the representatives of khaps from UP, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Delhi would be meeting the Indian government and President Droupadi Murmu to seek justice for wrestlers. Experts believe that BKU’s stance against Singh could prompt the BJP brass to take more action against Singh. Brij Bhushan had planned the ‘Jan Chetna Maha rally’ in Ayodhya on June 5 but called it off on June 4, 2021, citing police investigation and intervention by the Supreme Court.
