The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm warning for some districts in coastal Maharashtra as Cyclone Biparjoy intensifies into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm over the Arabian Sea. The met department has stated that it is very likely that there will be thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate spells of rain, and gusty winds of up to 30-40 km/hr at isolated places in the districts of Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Palghar, and Kolhapur over the next 3-4 hours.
The IMD has also tweeted that Cyclone Biparjoy lies centered over the east-central Arabian Sea, approximately 460 kilometers South-South-West of Porbandar, 510 kilometers South-South-West of Dwarka, and 600 kilometers South-South-West of Naliya, as of 8:30 am on Sunday.
The cyclone is expected to cross the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts and adjoining Pakistan on Thursday at noon as a very severe cyclonic storm, according to the met department. Meanwhile, the Southwest monsoon has reportedly advanced into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Karnataka, Goa, some parts of Konkan, most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, some parts of Andhra Pradesh, entire southwest and some more parts west-central Bay of Bengal, some more parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, and remaining parts of northeast Bay of Bengal as of June 11.
The IMD’s warning has asked citizens to take precautions while moving out and avoid any risky areas due to the thunderstorm in affected districts. It is advisable to stay updated with the latest alerts from the IMD and take necessary precautions accordingly.
