Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Minister for Minor Irrigation N.S. Boseraju, and senior party leader Thippannappa Kamakanur were elected unopposed to the Legislative Council by the returning officer Vishalakshi yesterday. This comes as no surprise since only three candidates remained in the fray after the withdrawal of nominations ended on Friday.
The elections were held to fill the seats that had fallen vacant following the resignation of the then-BJP members Laxman Savadi, Baburao Chinchanasur, and R. Shankar, who had quit their posts to contest the May 10 Assembly elections.
This announcement brings relief to the Congress party, as they were poised to lose the seats to the opposition. The unopposed selection of the three candidates nullified any prospect of the opposition scooping the vacant seats.
Politicians are known to go to great lengths to secure their positions, so the fact that these candidates managed to emerge unopposed suggests they command enough support, both within their party and among their constituents.
Shettar, Boseraju, and Kamakanur are not newcomers to the world of politics. They have a wealth of experience and are no strangers to being elected. Indeed, their win is not only evidence of their strength but also a testament to the faith that their respective parties have in them.
The election of these three candidates unopposed has brought about a sense of anticipation among their supporters. They are keen to see the trio continue their good work, which has engendered confidence among their respective constituencies.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the newly elected council members and how they will work in unison with their counterparts in the Legislative Council. In the meantime, there is much to celebrate, and the politicians are sure to be on cloud nine.
