Three families from the parish of Clarendon in Jamaica have received brand-new houses under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP). The units were handed over by Prime Minister Andrew Holness on July 12.
Fitzroy Edwards from Berrydale District in Scott’s Pass and Kadian Campbell from Darlow District both received three-bedroom houses, while Everton Samuels from Kemps Hill District in Race Course was given a two-bedroom home.
Edwards, a single father of five children, including a 19-year-old son with physical disabilities, expressed his gratitude for the safe and decent shelter provided for his family. Their previous two-bedroom house had become dilapidated and difficult to maintain due to financial challenges.
Samuels, 65 years old, was also grateful to move into a newly built home. His previous house was partially destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. He now plans to occupy the new house with his 13-year-old grandniece, who will start high school in September.
Prime Minister Holness praised the efficiency and high standards of the NSHP contractors. He highlighted that the construction of the units took less time than anticipated, mentioning that the government is continuously improving the efficiency of the programme. The cost of building the homes has also decreased over time.
Lothan Cousins, Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Western, called on private-sector entities to collaborate with the government and support the NSHP’s efforts to provide housing units to vulnerable citizens throughout the country.
The NSHP aims to address the housing needs of low-income Jamaicans, providing them with safe and affordable homes. By partnering with the private sector and streamlining construction processes, the programme endeavors to make homeownership accessible to more individuals and families.
The successful completion of these new homes in Clarendon demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing adequate housing for its citizens. The NSHP continues to make strides in improving the lives of those in need, enabling them to live in comfortable and secure environments.
In the future, it is hoped that more families in Clarendon and across Jamaica will benefit from the NSHP. By working together, the government and private sector can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable citizens, granting them the opportunity to thrive and prosper in their new homes.
