Three-day-old Baby Boy Found Dead in Abandoned Well, Mother Questioned by Police

In a tragic incident in Coimbatore, a three-day-old baby boy was discovered deceased at the bottom of an abandoned well in Mettuvavi village. Local residents raised the alarm after detecting a foul smell emanating from the well on a farmland. The infant’s body was found wrapped in a gunny bag, prompting an investigation by the Negamam police.

The mother of the baby, a 26-year-old woman, has been questioned by the authorities in connection with the distressing case. According to an investigating officer, the woman, a resident of Mettuvavi village, was involved in a relationship with a truck driver after experiencing two failed marriages.

Being a divorcee, she became pregnant during this relationship and gave birth to the baby boy at her residence just three days ago. The villagers were aware of the birth. However, suspicions have arisen that the woman may have committed infanticide with the assistance of her family members, disposing of the body in the abandoned well.

The baby’s body was retrieved from the well on Saturday morning and has since been sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for a postmortem examination. The officer conducting the investigation highlighted that during the interrogation, the woman provided conflicting statements. Initially, she stated that the baby was a boy, but later claimed it was a girl. The exact cause of death can only be determined once the postmortem results are available, which will guide further action.

Notably, due to the mother’s weakened state after giving birth at home, she has been admitted to CMCH for medical treatment. To ensure her safety, female police officers have been deployed to keep a watchful eye on her during her stay. Additionally, a team of police officers questioned her family members at the Pollachi all-woman station on Saturday.

The Negamam police have registered a case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the truth behind this distressing incident. As the community mourns the loss of this innocent life, it is crucial that all aspects of the case are examined diligently and fairly.
