Koo CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna believes that Threads, Meta’s new microblogging app, is not a threat to Koo, the local-language-supporting social media platform. While Threads could potentially threaten Twitter, as both platforms compete for the English-speaking user base, Koo remains focused on catering to users who speak non-English native languages. Radhakrishna stated that Koo currently has over 80% of its platform users using local languages, whereas Threads and Twitter are unlikely to reach more than 5% in the near future.
Since its launch in 2020, Koo has grown to support content in over 20 languages and has amassed over 60 million downloads and users across 100 countries. In an effort to expand further, Koo plans to introduce verified profiles for journalists, actors, and cricketers on its premium service, allowing them to engage with subscribers in a more interactive manner.
Radhakrishna also expressed his opinion that Threads may struggle to compete with Twitter due to its association with Instagram’s lifestyle-focused platform. While Threads aims to be a thoughts and opinions platform, users of Instagram are more likely to focus on sharing pictures and videos. Nevertheless, Threads, closely integrated with Instagram, has gained significant traction, surpassing 50 million users within 24 hours of its launch.
Meta’s extensive user base on Instagram, which exceeds 2.35 billion active users, has undoubtedly aided Threads’ rapid growth and had an impact on rival platform Twitter. The newly appointed CEO of Twitter, Linda Yaccarino, addressed the Twitter community, emphasizing the importance of staying together and highlighting that Twitter’s unique community cannot be duplicated.
Twitter currently boasts over 368 million monthly active users worldwide as of December 2022, according to Statista. However, with the emergence of competing platforms like Threads, the landscape of social media continues to evolve.
In conclusion, Koo CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna believes that Threads poses a potential threat to Twitter but not to Koo. With its focus on supporting local languages, Koo has established a strong presence and plans to expand further by introducing verified profiles on its platform. Meanwhile, Meta’s Threads has gained significant traction, driven by its integration with Instagram, and is making an impact on rival platform Twitter. As the social media landscape continues to evolve, platforms like Koo, Threads, and Twitter compete for the attention of users worldwide.
