LEWISTON, Maine – In a heartwarming addition to this year’s Veterans Day observance, a therapy horse named Hercules will be joining the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. The event, taking place on November 9th at 10 a.m., aims to honor the brave individuals who have served in the military.

Hercules, a magnificent Friesian gelding standing at an impressive height of 17.3 hands (around 70 inches), comes from the esteemed Horses Over America organization based in Saco. Known for their work in using therapy horses to assist individuals of all ages with mental health issues, the organization has been making a positive impact in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

This year’s Veterans Day observance in Lewiston holds special significance as it takes place just a couple of weeks after a tragic mass shooting that devastated the community. Hosting Hercules at this time provides an opportunity for healing and solace.

Gerry Scott, the retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves who founded Horses Over America, will conduct the riderless horse ceremony with Hercules. Additionally, Scott is scheduled to deliver the keynote address, sharing his insights and experiences with the attendees.

The ceremony will not only feature Hercules but will also include the unveiling of the 34th memorial stone marker. This marker proudly displays the names of esteemed local veterans who have served in various branches of the military.

To further enhance the event, the Kora Shrine band will take the stage, providing soul-stirring melodies. The Shriners’ Legion of Honor will also join in the proceedings. Furthermore, the ceremony will provide an opportunity for attendees to ring a school bell in the name of peace, invoking a sense of hope and unity.

Several groups and organizations are expected to attend, including veterans organizations, the Lewiston High School Air Force Junior ROTC, the Boy Scouts, and Gold Star Mothers. Politicians or their representatives are also scheduled to address the gathering, offering their gratitude and support.

With its therapeutic presence and symbolic significance, Hercules the therapy horse will undoubtedly add a touch of inspiration and comfort to the Lewiston Veterans Day observance. The event promises to be a powerful tribute to those who have served and a reminder of the resilience and strength of the local community.

As the ceremony unfolds, attendees will not only bear witness to the ceremony’s meaningful rituals and performances but will also have an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans throughout history. The inclusion of Hercules serves as a reminder that healing can come in various forms, and the support of therapy animals can make a profound difference in the lives of individuals.

The Veterans Day observance at Veterans Memorial Park holds deep significance for the people of Lewiston, and this year’s addition of Hercules will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact. The ceremony will celebrate the bravery and selflessness of veterans while honoring their dedication to protecting our freedom. It is a time for the community to come together, pay tribute, and demonstrate their unwavering support for those who have served.
