Petrie delved into the study of modern health worries over two decades ago, well before the influence of the internet amplified these concerns. During his initial surveys in New Zealand, Petrie found that contaminated water was the primary fear, followed by worries about traffic fumes, antibiotics in food, and bacteria in air-conditioning systems. Interestingly, individuals with higher levels of modern health worries were more likely to experience symptoms and seek medical attention.

Petrie’s fascination with this subject began during a lunchtime conversation with his tennis team, where he discovered that many members felt their health was influenced by environmental factors. This realization prompted him to explore the psychological aspects of these worries further – a realm that health psychologists had yet to fully grasp.

In 2002, Petrie seized an opportunity to examine the impact of beliefs on symptom interpretation during an aerial-spraying program to eradicate the painted apple moth in parts of West Auckland. The results reaffirmed his expectations: individuals who were already worried about their health reported more symptoms and believed that their children and pets had been adversely affected by the pesticide spray.

However, not all modern health concerns are rooted in unfounded conspiracy theories. Evidence suggests that air pollution is indeed detrimental to our well-being, certain chemicals in the environment possess the potential to harm human health, and overusing antibiotics in the food-producing industry has contributed to drug resistance.

Petrie, in collaboration with researchers in Sweden, recently conducted a study examining data from participants of the Västerbotten Environmental Health Study. Sweden, with its history of banning amalgam fillings and concerns about sick building syndrome, proved to be a fertile ground for this research. Interestingly, the study revealed that individuals with high levels of modern health worries in Sweden don’t necessarily adopt healthier lifestyles. Instead, their focus centers on avoiding exposure to the environmental factors that bother them, neglecting basic healthy habits such as reducing alcohol consumption, engaging in physical activity, and abstaining from smoking.

The increase in modern health worries tends to coincide with age, with women slightly more prone to such concerns than men. This phenomenon aligns with the nocebo effect, where individuals develop side effects and symptoms purely due to their anticipation of them. Petrie believes these worries contribute to the rise in alternative therapies that promise immune-system support and detoxification.

While it is undeniable that certain threats to our health exist, such as air pollution and excessive antibiotic use, it is important to maintain a balanced perspective. Petrie cautions against fixating on minor factors that have minimal impact on our overall well-being, while neglecting the more significant contributors to our health, such as unhealthy habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
