Micah Miller from St. Cloud State and Isaiah Saville from Omaha have been notable players in the league. However, the current season sees Kaiden Mbereko and Zaccharya Wisdom, both teammates at Colorado College, representing Black players in the NCHC. Mbereko, a sophomore goalie, has been a crucial contributor to Colorado College’s success, while Wisdom, a freshman forward, scored the game-deciding goal in a recent victory against Minnesota. Both players are proud to advocate for the sport and strive for increased diversity.
Mbereko, a standout player, expressed his gratitude towards his brother for introducing him to hockey. The young goalie fell in love with the sport when he first tried on a pair of goalie pads. His impressive performances on the ice have established him as one of the best collegiate goalies in the country. Wisdom, hailing from Toronto, Ontario, believes that although Canada considers hockey its national sport, the game still lacks diversity. He acknowledges the progress that has been made but emphasizes the importance of continuing the work towards inclusivity. Wisdom, alongside Mbereko, aims to inspire and bring about greater diversity within the sport. Their presence on the ice serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring Black players, and they are determined to make a difference in promoting diversity.
The NCHC has been deliberate in its efforts to diversify hockey, recognizing the need to make the sport accessible and welcoming to all.
