The 2023 season in the Pac-12 Conference is shaping up to be a year dominated by talented quarterbacks and improved defenses. As teams prepare for the upcoming season, one area of focus for many is improving their pass defense.

The Oregon Ducks, despite having 2023 NFL first-round draft pick Christian Gonzalez at cornerback, struggled in pass defense last season, ranking 102nd nationally in yards allowed. Oregon’s defensive coordinator, Tosh Lupoi, understands the importance of solid pass defense, stating that they want to be a defense that is respected and feared.

To improve their pass defense, the Ducks made moves in the offseason, signing proven players like safeties Evan Williams and Tysheem Johnson, as well as cornerbacks Nikko Reed and Khyree Jackson through the transfer portal. Lupoi recognized that their secondary wasn’t the only area that needed improvement, as they focused on various aspects of their defense.

One key factor that could improve the Ducks’ defense is an improved pass rush. Lupoi highlighted two players who could make a significant impact in that regard. Nose tackle Popo Aumavae, who missed the entire 2022 season due to a foot injury, is back for his seventh season. Aumavae, listed at 6-3, 304 pounds, possesses the size and speed to disrupt opposing offenses. Lupoi expressed excitement about Aumavae’s ability to strike with violence and rush the passer.

Another player who has caught Lupoi’s attention is junior defensive end Jordan Burch, a transfer from South Carolina. Burch, standing at 6-6, 276 pounds, was a consensus five-star recruit and possesses the ideal measurables for a successful defensive end. Lupoi emphasized the need for Burch to consistently play with physicality and relentless effort, as he has shown flashes of greatness.

As the Ducks continue their preseason camp, Lupoi aims to build a defense that is respected and feared. Improving their pass defense and enhancing their pass rush will be crucial components in achieving that goal. With the addition of talented players and a renewed focus on various areas of their defense, the Ducks hope to have a dominant season in the Pac-12 Conference.

Overall, the upcoming season in the Pac-12 Conference promises to be exciting, with dominant quarterbacks leading the way and teams making improvements in their defenses. The performance of defensive units, including the Oregon Ducks, will play a vital role in determining success on the field.
