As the fight against Islamophobia intensifies, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for a concerted effort from the public and private media in Member States to combat Islamophobia and insults against religious symbols. The OIC is urging cinematic, television, radio, journalistic, and social media platforms to produce content that promotes tolerance, coexistence, and respect for all.
The call was made during an emergency meeting of the OIC States Broadcasting Union (OSBU) held virtually on July 5, 2023. The meeting aimed to discuss a mechanism for addressing the desecration of religious sanctities in the media following the recent incident of burning a copy of the Holy Qur’an in the Swedish capital.
During the meeting, Mr. Wajdi Ali Sindi, the Director of the OIC Information Department, highlighted the importance of collective efforts at the national level to counter such incidents and insulting religious symbols. The Final Communique of the OIC’s Emergency open-ended meeting of the Executive Committee included 26 items, outlining a comprehensive plan to tackle these issues effectively.
The OIC is calling for national parliaments, media organizations, and civil society groups to pronounce the OIC’s stance on this matter and advocate for necessary legislative measures to criminalize such attacks. In this pursuit, the OIC’s various departments and media arms, including the Department of Information, the Islamophobia Observatory, the Standing Committee for Information and Cultural Affairs (COMIAC), the OIC States Broadcasting Union (OSBU), and the Union of News Agencies (UNA), are working collaboratively with partners to enhance understanding regarding responsible use of freedom of expression in the media.
In addition, the OIC is working towards establishing national mechanisms to hold accountable the media outlets that continue to perpetuate hate speech and intolerance. Implementing its media strategy to combat Islamophobia, the organization aims to foster a more inclusive society that respects all religious beliefs.
It is crucial to note that promoting tolerance and respect should not infringe on freedom of speech. The OIC advocates for a balanced approach that allows for open dialogue while discouraging the dissemination of offensive content that incites violence or promotes hatred.
By promoting a greater understanding of Islam and its principles, the OIC aims to dispel misunderstandings and stereotypes that fuel Islamophobia. This effort aligns with the organization’s commitment to fostering peace, harmony, and coexistence among diverse societies.
The OIC’s call for action against Islamophobia and insults towards religious symbols is a significant step towards combating discrimination and promoting inclusivity. However, it is important to maintain journalistic integrity by presenting different perspectives and opinions on this issue.
In conclusion, the OIC’s plea to the media to play a proactive role in countering Islamophobia and insulting religious symbols reflects the organization’s commitment to fostering tolerance, coexistence, and respect for all. By working together toward this goal, Member States can create a more inclusive society and promote a deeper understanding of Islam’s values.
