The International Decade For People Of African Descent Shines Spotlight on Cultural Inclusion

The International Decade For People Of African Descent is currently garnering attention for its significant contributions to cultural inclusion and a promising future. The OAS website provides a comprehensive list of individuals from the Americas, both past and present, who have played pivotal roles in advancing this important cause. The list also includes notable Guyanese figures such as Bishop Randolf George, Kofi, Walter Rodney, and various other activists who have tirelessly fought for the rights and aesthetics of Afro-Guyanese.

Locally, there are creative producers who have gone above and beyond by registering their own entities and companies in the often challenging landscape of creative endeavors. Despite encountering numerous obstacles and conflicting experiences, these individuals have paved the way for a decolonized ethos that resonates with the present. It has been a journey filled with isolation and frustration, but their perseverance has brought about remarkable accomplishments.

There are two crucial aspects of this historical United Nations mandate that are currently under discussion. Both aspects are tied to the same ultimate goal: evaluating the participants and their contributions. The quality of the work executed throughout the duration of this mandate will serve as the criteria for assessment. It is imperative to emphasize the need for clarity and engagement to ensure that doors for participation remain open.

As a founding member of ACDA, a successful Afro-based organization in Guyana, I already have access to participate in this momentous occasion. The company I registered back in 1992, which has been associated with various nationally recognized projects, aligns perfectly with the spirit of this event. The projects I have in store are groundbreaking and have never been attempted locally or within the Caribbean.

I must admit that I underestimated the magnitude of the work and intellectual resources required to bring my creative ideas to life. Accessing and applying a vast array of reference materials, including books spanning different time periods and local models and tools developed since the advent of PCs and related software, has been both rewarding and challenging.

To truly measure the intentions of the UN Mandate, we must allow our existing standards to evolve from mere dreams of possibility to tangible realities. This marks the beginning of an enabling journey. Therefore, serious creative institutions must collectively embrace an open approach to participation, presenting their contributions in the realms of art, music, literature, and industrial creativity with a focus on protection. The accompanying link to the OAS Page provides further information on this crucial initiative.

As we navigate through this remarkable time, it is essential to recognize the significance of this International Decade For People Of African Descent. By acknowledging and celebrating the efforts of individuals and organizations dedicated to advancing cultural inclusion, we can propel ourselves toward a brighter and more inclusive future.
