Millions of Muslims worldwide travel to Makkah annually to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage–one of the five pillars of Islam. This spiritual journey takes place during the last month of the Islamic calendar, known as Dhu Al Hijja. Every Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform the Hajj at least once in their lifetime.
The pilgrimage begins with making a sincere declaration of intention and entering the state of Ihram–a sacred state that requires pilgrims to wear simple, white clothing and avoid certain actions like cutting their hair or using perfumes.
During the Hajj, pilgrims undertake several rituals, including circumambulating the Kaaba and walking between Al Safa and Al Marwa–a reenactment of Hagar’s search for water for her son, Ismail. Pilgrims also spend a night in Mina, where they recite prayers and collect pebbles to use for the symbolic stoning of the devil.
On the day of Arafah, pilgrims make their way to Mount Arafat, where the Prophet Mohammed gave his final sermon. This is considered a pivotal day of the Hajj, and standing and praying on the mountain peak is the pinnacle of the pilgrimage.
Safety and crowd management are integral during the Hajj, which attracts over two million pilgrims. The Saudi government employs a variety of technology and highly trained personnel to ensure the safety of all participants.
The Hajj pilgrimage is a deeply spiritual and life-changing experience for Muslims worldwide. Its rituals have been performed for over 1,300 years and remain an essential obligation for believers.
