The Dead Rabbit, a renowned pub in New York City, is set to open a new and expansive Irish whiskey wonderland in Washington D.C.’s Penn Quarter next year. This exciting development comes as the pub celebrates its tenth anniversary in the heart of the Financial District. With locations already established in New York City and plans for an Austin edition in 2024, the Dead Rabbit has its sights set on expanding its reach across the United States.
Spanning an impressive 6,200 square feet, the Irish whiskey wonderland will soon become a prominent fixture in Penn Quarter. While the exact address has not been disclosed in the press release, it has been revealed that the two-level saloon will be situated in a historic building just blocks away from Capital One Arena and the National Portrait Gallery.
The Dead Rabbit’s mission is to redefine the perception of American-Irish pubs, moving away from inaccurate stereotypes. According to managing partner Jack McGarry, that can’t be done with one location in New York. McGarry, a Belfast native, co-founded the Dead Rabbit in 2013 with the aim of creating a modern and polished alternative to traditional Irish pubs, particularly those found in New York City’s Times Square.
Known for its extensive selection of perfectly poured pints of Guinness, Irish whiskey, and Irish coffee, the Dead Rabbit has earned a place among the world’s best bars. Housed in a historic 19th-century townhouse, the original five-story location boasts a recently expanded collection of cocktails from Ireland and beyond. The pub also offers a menu of classic Irish pub grub, including dishes such as lamb stew, fish and chips, and corned beef hash. Additionally, the Dead Rabbit has become famous for its Sunday ritual of serving traditional Irish breakfast and roasts.
The choice of Penn Quarter for the Dead Rabbit’s new location is significant, as the neighborhood recently lost another beloved Irish bar when Fado closed its doors after a 22-year run. However, the Dubliner, considered the patriarch of D.C.’s Irish bar community since 1974, remains nearby. McGarry embraces the presence of other Irish institutions in the area, as he believes it demonstrates an appreciation for Irish culture.
To ensure consistency across all its future locations, the Dead Rabbit has enlisted the help of Belfast-based design and marketing firm Crown Creative. This partnership aims to retain the pub’s core identity while embracing new environments.
The upcoming Irish whiskey wonderland in Washington D.C. promises to offer more than just a remarkable selection of spirits. Guests can expect a modern Irish playlist, live performances featuring fiddles and uilleann pipes, and a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates Irish culture. The Dead Rabbit is also known for its destination events in New York City, such as the Paddy’s not Patty’s Festival and the Jingle Jangle holiday takeover.
Although the previously announced expansion to New Orleans is currently on hold, the Dead Rabbit’s ventures in Austin and Washington D.C. demonstrate its commitment to sharing its unique brand of Irish hospitality with new audiences. As the pub continues to grow, it remains dedicated to challenging preconceived notions and celebrating the rich history and traditions of Irish pubs.
