Christmas Day sent The Color Purple’s Rotten Tomatoes score soaring.

The Color Purple managed to rake in $18 million on its debut and now the movie is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. On the review aggregator, the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s beloved novel sits at an 89% on the Tomatometer. The audience score is actually even higher at 94% with over 1,000 verified ratings.

Wildly enough, Warner Bros. has a trio of hits atop the Christmas Day box office ladder. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom reigned at number one, with Wonka lagging slightly behind The Color Purple. What a wild end to the year for the company as Barbie was the unquestioned biggest movie of 2023.

The Color Purple proved to be a major hit on Christmas Day, with the best opening on the winter holiday since 2009. In fact, it became the second-biggest Christmas Day opening ever. The success of the film can be attributed to word of mouth, as well as the competition from other films like Ferrari and The Boy in the Boat. However, the incredible cast, which includes Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Colman Domingo, and Danielle Brooks, played a significant role in the movie’s success.

The movie’s impact goes beyond the box office. Before its debut, Taraji P. Henson’s comments about the pay gap that Black actresses face in the industry sparked a conversation on social media. Henson expressed her frustrations about constantly fighting for equal pay and acknowledged the importance of leaving a positive legacy for the Black actresses coming up behind her.

Danielle Brooks, who plays Sofia in The Color Purple, has received accolades for her performance. The emotional moment when Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the original film adaptation, told Brooks she would be passing the baton to her was particularly moving. Winfrey expressed her confidence in Brooks and the impact the character of Sofia had on her own life.

The Color Purple has resonated with audiences and sparked conversations about important issues. It is a testament to the power of storytelling and the talent of the cast involved. As the film continues to make waves, the question remains: how far can it travel into the new year?
