**The Chicago Football Classic Returns, Igniting a Celebration of HBCUs and Inspiring Youth**

The Chicago Football Classic made a triumphant return to Soldier Field, marking its first appearance since 2019. While the actual game took center stage, it was the festivities leading up to it that truly stole the show. Founded in 1997 by Larry Huggins, Everett Rand, and Tim Rand, this weekend-long event aims to inspire young individuals to achieve their personal best. The celebration revolves around academics, extracurriculars, and the promotion of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), with thousands of dollars in scholarships being awarded alongside the scheduled programs.

The action-packed Saturday commenced with a college and career fair held at the city’s NFL stadium, followed by a thrilling battle of the bands. High schools from all over the area showcased their musical talents, captivating spectators in the process.

Amidst the smoky aroma of grills and the pulsating beats of DJ-helmed speaker systems, Mark Johnson stood out as a liaison recruiter and proud graduate of Alcorn State University. Johnson asserted that the event went far beyond being just a football game and cookout. Even the more academically-focused segments helped alleviate the pressure young students often face when connecting with potential colleges.

According to Johnson, the significance of the Chicago Football Classic lies in acknowledging the rich legacy that transcends mere pageantry and university pomp. For him, being a part of this event is about preserving and strengthening the unique culture of HBCUs, ensuring that the descendants of those who participated in the Great Migration have the opportunity to rediscover their roots.

It’s that familial environment, Johnson explained. We’ve lost sight of who we are… We want to ensure the continuation of that legacy.

He expressed his admiration for the young people who attended the college and career fair, as well as the tailgate and football game, stating that their interest in the culture he cherishes was truly heartening.

Johnson, who holds dual degrees, believes his time at Alcorn State University played a formative role in shaping his character and guiding him toward personal growth. He feels a responsibility as an alumnus to ensure that this invaluable experience is not missed by the younger generation.

Ashante Winters, a 19-year-old from the south suburbs, attended the event for the first time. Fortunately for her, several of the high schools participating in the competition were ones she had previously mentored. She found it touching to witness the younger bands performing, reflecting upon her own journey as a budding musician.

It’s wonderful to see so many young kids here, Winters remarked. I was once in their shoes.

Delano Redman, a 24-year-old trumpet player from Chicago State University, shared his enthusiasm for the bands, emphasizing how they inspire the youth to pursue a brighter future rather than being drawn to the streets.

Bryant Redd, a resident of Blue Island, expressed his joy at attending the event with his family, which had become an annual tradition for the past four years. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s event had to be canceled. Joining him were his wife and their sons, Bryant Jr. (10 years old) and Bryce (16 years old). While their oldest daughter was away at North Carolina A&T, all three of his children shared a passion for music. Thus, the battle of the bands served as an exciting prelude to the highly anticipated football game.

Echoing Johnson’s sentiments, Redd emphasized that many kids in the Chicagoland area remain unaware of the existence and significance of HBCUs. This recognition, combined with their shared love for the sport, serves as motivation for him to continue bringing his children to this event, allowing them to visualize their future paths.

They can see where they’re heading as they grow older, Redd concluded. Perhaps one day, he’ll be playing for one of these teams himself.

The revival of the Chicago Football Classic at Soldier Field not only ignites a spirit of celebration and camaraderie but also inspires and empowers young individuals to strive for excellence.
