Thailand’s parliament passed a same-sex marriage bill Wednesday, paving the way for the kingdom to become the first Southeast Asian nation to recognize LGBTQ marriage equality. The bill passed by 399 to 10 votes in the lower house, although it must still be approved by the Senate before it is endorsed by the king, and then published in the Royal Gazette. The move represents a significant step forward for LGBTQ rights in a region where conservative attitudes have long prevailed. One representative brought a huge rainbow flag into the chamber in celebration of the historic decision. LGBTQ activists have expressed optimism about the bill’s passage, highlighting the progress it signifies for equality in the country. The proposal changes references to men, women, husbands and wives in the marriage law to gender-neutral terms, ensuring equal rights for LGBTQ couples. This legislative change will grant LGBTQ couples in Thailand inheritance and adoption rights for the first time, marking a substantial milestone for the LGBTQ community in the country and the region.
