SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University in San Marcos has received a visit from the US Secret Service in preparation for hosting a 2024 presidential debate, according to recently obtained records. The documents indicate that the agency’s presence is related to concerns of a potential physical safety threat to the presidential candidates.
During the visit, the Secret Service, in collaboration with the Texas State University Police Department, assessed the security measures of the debate site and nearby hotels. The university is set to make history as the first location in Texas chosen to host a presidential debate and holds the distinction of being the only state university that has graduated a U.S. president — Lyndon B. Johnson.
