Texas Pet Food Recall: Salmonella Contamination Expands, Affecting Over 35 Brands

A recent pet food recall in Texas is now expanding to include more than 35 different brands of dry dog and cat food that may be contaminated with salmonella. Mid America Pet Food, the manufacturer behind the recall, stated that at least seven individuals have reported infections linked to the consumption of their products.

The recall encompasses a range of products with best by dates prior to October 31, 2024, and manufactured at Mid America Pet Food’s plant in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Among the affected brands are Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and certain varieties of Member’s Mark that were distributed nationwide.

This expanded recall comes on the heels of an initial recall just ten days ago, which involved three lots of Victor Super Premium Dog Food. Random sampling revealed the presence of salmonella, a bacterium that can lead to illness in both pets and humans.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the latest recall indicated that seven people have already reported salmonella infections as of November 1, 2023. When multiple individuals contract the same illness from consuming the same contaminated food or drink, it is considered an outbreak, as explained by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Salmonella bacteria is responsible for an estimated 1.3 million infections each year in the United States, resulting in over 26,000 hospitalizations and around 420 deaths, as reported by CDC data. Pets infected with salmonella may display symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Humans can experience similar symptoms, and in severe cases, more serious complications may arise, according to the FDA.

In response to the recall, the FDA advises individuals to safely dispose of the recalled pet food in a manner that prevents children, pets, and wildlife from accessing it. Additionally, it is recommended to thoroughly wash pet bowls and storage containers to eliminate any potential contamination.

Mid America Pet Food can be contacted by customers for further information through email at info@mapf.com or by phone at (888) 428-7544, Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time.

This recall is just one of several incidents this year where pet food has been found to contain salmonella or elevated levels of potentially harmful vitamins.
