Texas Dominates Baylor in Big 12 Opener: Ewers Shines with 293 Yards in 38-6 Victory

In a thrilling Big 12 Conference opener, the No. 3 ranked Texas Longhorns came away with an impressive 38-6 victory over the Baylor Bears. Led by freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for 293 yards and a touchdown, Texas dominated the game from start to finish.

This game marked a significant milestone in the historic rivalry between Texas and Baylor, as it was the final scheduled meeting between the two teams before Texas moves to the Southeastern Conference next season. The Longhorns certainly made their mark in this last showdown.

Ewers showcased his talent and composure throughout the game, completing 18 of 23 passes and adding a rushing touchdown to his impressive stat line. He connected with his receivers with precision and poise, helping Texas maintain control of the match.

It wasn’t just Ewers who shone on the field. Running back Jonathon Brooks had a fantastic game, rushing for 106 yards and scoring two touchdowns on 18 carries. Ja’Tavion Sanders also stood out with five receptions for 110 yards, contributing significantly to the Longhorns’ offensive success.

One of the key factors in Texas’ victory was their strong defensive performance. Despite Baylor’s efforts to reach the end zone, the Longhorns held them to just three points on three red zone possessions. Texas forced turnovers on downs and even intercepted a pass in the end zone, effectively shutting down the Bears’ scoring opportunities.

Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson threw for 203 yards but struggled to find the end zone, ultimately throwing an interception. Monaray Baldwin was the Bears’ leading receiver, with three receptions for 81 yards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Longhorns’ dominant performance.

The Longhorns took an early lead when Brooks broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Baylor responded with a field goal, but Texas quickly extended their lead with Ewers’ impressive 29-yard rushing touchdown.

Texas showcased their creativity and trickery on offense, with Xavier Worthy throwing a backward pass to Sanders, setting up CJ Baxter for a touchdown run. Brooks added another touchdown before halftime, giving the Longhorns a comfortable lead.

Baylor managed to add a field goal just before halftime, taking advantage of a muffed punt by Worthy, but it was a small consolation as they trailed 28-6 going into the break.

In the fourth quarter, Texas added a field goal and sealed the victory with a touchdown pass from Ewers to Worthy, capping off an impressive 95-yard drive.

With this win, the Longhorns have started the season with four consecutive victories for the first time since 2012. They have firmly established themselves as contenders in the Big 12 Conference and are poised to make a strong push for the postseason.

As the final chapter in their storied rivalry with Baylor comes to a close, Texas can look back on this dominant victory as a fitting farewell. The Longhorns showcased their talent and potential, leaving no doubt that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the seasons to come.
