Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Strives to Build Strong Defensive Foundation Despite Preseason Setbacks

The Houston Texans’ new head coach, DeMeco Ryans, is determined to establish a solid defensive foundation for the team, despite facing some setbacks in the preseason. Ryans, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, understands the importance of a strong defense in achieving success. However, he acknowledges that building such a foundation takes time and is still a work in progress.

With just one preseason game left against the New Orleans Saints and a couple of weeks of practice before their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 10, the Texans are running out of time to fine-tune their defensive processes. The team’s performance in their NRG Stadium opener against the Miami Dolphins was disappointing, with the defense surrendering 205 rushing yards in a 28-3 loss. This suggests that the process of building a strong defense may be behind schedule.

While fans may be focused on win-loss results, Ryans emphasizes that the development of a culture that executes soundly and adheres to the plan is more important. He understands that starting afresh with a new team involves implementing fundamentals, techniques, and coaching methods, which takes time and dedication. Ryans believes in the beauty of coaching, seeing players progress from step one and continuously improve.

Interestingly, Ryans gained coaching experience under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2018. During those seasons, the team posted records of 6-10 and 4-12, and faced challenges along the way. Ryans’ experience with the 49ers gives him optimism and a sense of familiarity, even in the face of potential struggles for the Texans in 2023, particularly if rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud requires on-the-job training.

Ryans’ love for the coaching process is evident, as it allows him to witness players’ growth and improvement. He remains focused on the journey and remains undeterred by the obstacles ahead. The Texans have signed cornerback Cameron Dantzler and dropped wide receiver Alex Bachman, showing their commitment to making adjustments to improve the team.

As the Texans move forward, Ryans’ experience and positive mindset could prove valuable in overcoming challenges and forging a strong defensive foundation. While it may take time, Ryans understands the process and is determined to see his team thrive. With the regular season fast approaching, the Texans need to prioritize their efforts to ensure progress in their defensive structure.
