Tesla Introduces Full Self-Driving Transfers as Standard Feature for New Vehicles

Tesla is now offering customers a one-time transfer of their purchased Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to a new vehicle, according to a recent report. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this one-time amnesty during an earnings call, and now the official terms of the offer have been revealed. To take advantage of the FSD transfer, customers will need to purchase a new Tesla and take delivery by September 30th, 2023.

Previously, FSD purchases were tied to the specific vehicle they were enabled on, and owners would have to repurchase the software if they wanted to upgrade to a different Tesla model or if their vehicle was totaled in a crash. This had been a major point of frustration for owners, especially given the high cost of the feature, which has increased from $5,000 to $15,000.

With the new transfer offer, Tesla will no longer allow FSD to be transferred to another vehicle, whether through private sale or any other means. However, the offer may not satisfy customers who have already purchased a vehicle before July 20th, as it only applies to new purchases made within the specified timeframe.

While the FSD transfer offer may not fully address customer concerns, it could boost sales for Tesla during a quarter when deliveries were expected to slow down due to factory upgrades. In addition to the transfer offer, Musk also mentioned that Tesla is in talks to license FSD software to another automaker, indicating potential partnerships in the future.

It is important to note that Tesla does not guarantee delivery within the program end date and will not apply the transfer offer retroactively. Owners who wish to transfer their FSD will need to forfeit the feature on their current vehicle up to one week before their scheduled delivery day, even if they decide to keep the old car.

By providing this one-time FSD transfer opportunity, Tesla aims to address the frustrations expressed by its customers and create a more flexible ownership experience. However, it remains to be seen how well-received this offer will be among existing Tesla owners and whether it will lead to increased sales for the electric car manufacturer.
