Tension has risen in pockets of Murshidabad district in West Bengal following the murder of a local Congress leader, Fulchand Seikh, on Friday. State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has alleged that Seikh was shot at point blank range by a group of miscreants led by a local Trinamool Congress leader, Rafiq, while sitting in front of his residence alongside his son. Three others who attempted to save Seikh were also targeted by ruling party activists. The first day of nominations for the forthcoming state panchayat polls began with Seikh’s death. Congress leadership alleges that both of those arrested by police in connection with the murder were actively associated with the ruling party. The State Election Commission has demanded a detailed report from the Murshidabad district administration on the matter.
