Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available in 4 Middle Tennessee Counties Affected by Tornadoes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) has announced that Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is now available for four Middle Tennessee counties that were impacted by tornadoes over the weekend.

Following the tornado outbreak on Saturday, Dec. 9, President Joe Biden approved an expedited federal disaster declaration for the affected areas in the Volunteer State. As a result, the TDLWD revealed on Thursday, Dec. 14 that it is now accepting DUA applications from individuals in Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery, and Sumner counties.

The disaster period started on Sunday, Dec. 10, and will continue until June 16, 2024. Individuals who live in, work in, or travel through the four mentioned counties are required to submit their DUA applications by Jan. 16, 2024.

DUA is an insurance benefit designed for those affected by a disaster, but it is only available to individuals who meet specific criteria, including:

To apply for DUA, individuals can visit Jobs4TN.gov or call 1-877-813-0950, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. When applying online, applicants are requested to specify that their application is related to the damage caused by severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes.

To receive DUA benefits, applicants must submit the necessary documentation within 21 days of filing the application. This includes a Social Security number, a copy of the most recent federal income tax form or paycheck stubs, and proof of employment or self-employment at the time of the disaster. The required documents can be mailed to 220 French Landing Drive, Nashville, TN 37243, or faxed to 615-532-3374.

Job seekers in the affected areas can access job-search resources, job postings, and training programs by visiting local American Job Centers. These centers also offer assistance in exploring career options, preparing resumes and applications, and connecting with potential employers. More than 200,000 jobs are currently posted on Jobs4TN.gov.

The availability of Disaster Unemployment Assistance for the tornado-affected counties brings hope and support to individuals who have experienced job loss or disruption due to the severe storms. With the disaster period extending until 2024, this initiative aims to provide financial assistance and resources to help affected individuals get back on their feet.

As Middle Tennessee begins the process of rebuilding and recovery, the TDLWD remains committed to assisting those in need and ensuring that the community has access to essential employment services and support.
