Televangelist Timothy Omotoso and his two co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho, are currently on trial facing 62 charges including rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, and racketeering. The disturbing details of grooming and non-disclosure have been revealed during the trial in High Court in Gqeberha.
The state recently called its eleventh witness, Dr. Carol Miller, who co-authored a report exploring grooming, non-disclosure, consent, and the impact on the victims. Dr. Miller, who is witness number 43 on the state’s list, testified about the power Omotoso held in his church, where he was regarded as second only to God. This power made it easy for him to groom victims and ensured their silence.
According to Dr. Miller, many of the victims she interviewed had suffered from rape trauma syndrome. Omotoso’s ability to curse those who disobeyed him, combined with his position of authority, created a climate of fear, making it difficult for the victims to disclose the crimes committed against them. The victims felt trapped and were often controlled by their fear of the consequences if they spoke out.
The trial continues to shed light on the sinister activities allegedly committed by Omotoso and his co-accused.
