According to a report released by non-profit Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Telangana has been ranked first in overall environmental performance among all Indian states. The annual report by Delhi-based CSE titled ‘State of India’s Environment 2023: In Figures’ lists statistics on numerous environmental factors such as climate change, health, food, migration and agriculture. The report considers progress made in areas such as forest cover and municipal waste treatment to rank the states. K T Rama Rao, Minister of Telangana, stated that Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao’s afforestation scheme, Haritha Haaram, along with other eco-friendly programmes, played a significant role in securing the top ranking. The state has recorded an increase in forest cover from 19,854 square kilometres in 2015-16 to 26,969 square kilometres in 2023. In the last nine years, 273 crore saplings have been planted across Telangana, covering a remarkable 24.06% of the state’s geographical area. Furthermore, solar energy production in the state has risen to 5,865 MW, up from 74 MW when it was formed in 2014.
