Teenage Schoolboy Dies After Alleged Torture by Security Taskforce Over Stolen Phone
A tragic incident has unfolded in Adamawa State, as a 17-year-old schoolboy identified as Abdullahi Abba lost his life after allegedly being tortured by members of a security taskforce. The taskforce, known as Operation Farauta, consists of military and police personnel and is responsible for combating kidnapping and robbery activities in the state.
Abdullahi, an SSS 2 student, was apprehended by the taskforce on Saturday, August 5, following a complaint from a neighbor regarding a missing phone. Shockingly, Abdullahi was reportedly manhandled and subjected to physical abuse until he lost consciousness. He was subsequently rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Four days later, Abdullahi tragically passed away while still in a coma. According to the lawyer representing the family, Abubakar Diram, the incident occurred after a boy implicated Abdullahi in the theft of a mobile phone. Despite Abdullahi’s denial of any involvement, he was allegedly tortured until he became unconscious and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The devastating turn of events took place at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, where Abdullahi was receiving medical attention. The family lawyer had filed a petition to the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police on August 7, seeking justice for the unconscious teenager. The local community is now expressing their outrage over the circumstances surrounding Abdullahi’s death.
It is worth noting that phone theft and snatching incidents, often occurring during daylight hours, have become prevalent crimes in Adamawa State, particularly in areas such as Yola North, Yola South, and Girei. Perpetrators are typically young individuals who lack access to formal education and resort to criminal activities for survival.
In response to mounting anger and public outcry over Abdullahi’s tragic fate, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, has reassured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. Nguroje emphasized that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing will face appropriate punishment.
This distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the need to address security challenges in Adamawa State and protect the lives of innocent individuals. The community is hopeful that justice will be served, bringing solace to Abdullahi’s grieving family.
In conclusion, the tragic death of Abdullahi Abba has raised concerns about the conduct and accountability of security taskforces in combating crimes in Adamawa State. As investigations continue, it is essential to prioritize justice and ensure that incidents of alleged torture are thoroughly evaluated to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
