Teen Recovering from Hantavirus Linked to Mouse Infestation in King County

A teenager in King County, Washington is currently recovering from a case of hantavirus believed to be linked to a mouse infestation. According to health officials in King County, this individual was hospitalized in early August but is now on the path to recovery. The patient reported being exposed to a mouse infestation at their home in Issaquah, as well as being bitten by a rodent in the woods in the same residential area.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a serious respiratory illness caused by the hantavirus, which is carried only by deer mice in Washington state. It is important to note that HPS is not transmitted from person-to-person. People can contract HPS by breathing in the virus when droppings or urine containing the virus are stirred up, releasing it into the air as mist or dust. Additionally, touching the eyes, nose, or mouth after coming into contact with infected droppings or urine can also lead to infection.

Since 1997, there have been six reported cases of HPS in King County that were believed to be contracted within the county. The most recent case prior to this teenager’s diagnosis occurred in December 2021. While HPS can result in severe illness and respiratory distress, recovery chances are higher if medical attention is sought early and healthcare providers are informed of potential exposure to rodents.

It is worth noting that individuals are most commonly exposed to hantavirus in and around their homes, cabins, or sheds, particularly when cleaning or exploring enclosed areas with a high concentration of mouse droppings. Mice often seek shelter in buildings, emphasizing the importance of sealing up any openings that may allow them access.

The early symptoms of HPS can resemble those of the flu or a stomach bug, including fatigue, fever, muscle aches, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cough. These symptoms typically manifest within one to six weeks after exposure to rodents.

While there is no specific treatment for HPS, prompt medical attention and providing healthcare providers with information about potential rodent contact can lead to a better outcome. It is crucial for individuals to seek medical help if they experience symptoms consistent with HPS, especially if there has been exposure to rodents.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of taking precautions to prevent hantavirus infection. Sealing up homes and other structures to limit rodent access can significantly reduce the risk of exposure. By staying vigilant and informed about the potential dangers associated with mouse infestations, individuals can protect themselves and their communities from this serious respiratory illness.
