In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon, a teenager was fatally stabbed on a public bus in New York City in what police believe to be a gang-related attack. The altercation took place on Staten Island at around 2:30 p.m. ET, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell. Witnesses reported an argument between the two male teens, during which a knife was produced and gang signs were exchanged.
Following the confrontation, one of the teens stabbed the other in the chest and fled the bus. The suspect managed to run for about three blocks before being chased down and apprehended by a brave group of individuals. A retired NYPD sergeant, a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officer, and a good Samaritan played a crucial role in capturing the suspect.
Tragically, the 13-year-old victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical condition when taken to the hospital. Regrettably, he was later pronounced dead. Chief of Patrol John Chell expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, Tragic, tragic homicide today. We believe this motive is possibly gang-related.
Anthony Esemplare, who witnessed the aftermath, described the scene as children fleeing the bus in fear. He emphasized the distressing aspect of the incident, saying, When you send your kids to school in the morning and you think they’ll be coming home on the bus, you shouldn’t have to worry about them in a manner like this.
Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of the NYC Transit Department of Subways, commended the bus driver for his prompt action. The driver immediately contacted the police and managed to maintain calm on the bus despite the distressing circumstances.
