Teen Driver Faces Homicide Charge After Deadly Collision in Mankato

An 18-year-old teen driver is now facing a homicide charge after a fatal collision that occurred on Monday night in Mankato, Minnesota. The young woman, identified as Kaylee Lynette Richmond, was behind the wheel when her vehicle struck and killed 66-year-old Jeffery Allie Ward at the intersection of Madison Ave. and Hope St.

According to the State Patrol, the tragic incident took place around 9:30 p.m. At the scene, Ward was pronounced dead, leaving the community in shock and mourning. As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Richmond allegedly admitted to racing another vehicle just before the collision occurred.

Witnesses reported seeing a black vehicle, believed to be involved in the alleged race with Richmond’s car, leaving the scene of the incident. However, it remains uncertain whether the driver of that vehicle has been identified or located at this time.

The State Patrol’s reconstruction of the collision indicated that Richmond’s vehicle was traveling between 70 to 75 mph when it struck Ward, well above the speed limit of 35 mph in that particular area. Additionally, there were no skid marks observed in front of the car-pedestrian collision site.

Following the accident, Richmond was transported to the Mayo Clinic Health System facility in Mankato to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. She was later booked into the Blue Earth County Jail on Tuesday morning.

As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, Richmond now finds herself facing a charge of Criminal Vehicular Homicide, specifically for operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner. The authorities are taking this case seriously, and the Blue Earth County Attorney’s Office is recommending a conditional bail amount of $20,000 for Richmond.

The loss of a life and the circumstances surrounding this collision highlight the importance of responsible driving, particularly for young and inexperienced drivers. It serves as a reminder that even a momentary lapse in concentration or an impulsive decision on the road can have devastating consequences. The events in Mankato have left the community grieving, and it is hoped that justice will be served while providing an opportunity for reflection and awareness regarding the importance of road safety.
