Nearly two million Muslims from around the world gathered in Saudi Arabia on Friday for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The high point of their spiritual year, the Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, which every capable Muslim must perform at least once in their life. The Hajj officially ends on Tuesday, but Friday marked its zenith with a climb to the top of the Mount Arafat. Nigerian pilgrim, Taofik Odunewu, was overcome with emotion, stating, “I am now a newborn baby and I don’t have any sin…I pray for prosperity, long life, and…I pray for my country.” Meanwhile, Syrian pilgrim, Mohammed al-Hammoud, made a political statement by climbing Mount Arafat and waving the flag of rebels that have been fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for three years. This year’s Hajj sees Saudi Arabia and four other Arab countries joining the US in air strikes against ISIS. Security forces were also out en masse across Mount Arafat and its plain to ensure safety during the gathering.
