Dibrugarh: Hundreds of tea garden workers from the Assam Chah Janagosthi Jatiya Mahasabha (ACJJM) took to the streets of Dibrugarh on Wednesday to protest against the denial of caste certificates to certain sub-groups within the tea community in the state. Carrying banners and placards, the protesters marched to the District Commissioner’s Office, where they voiced their discontent with the government’s actions.
According to the ACJJM, the state government has been withholding caste certificates from 30 out of the total 108 sub-groups that make up the tea community in Assam. This denial of certificates has had severe consequences for the affected sub-groups, impeding their ability to secure land rights, access education, and avail healthcare services.
Khagen Rajowar, district president of the ACCJM’s Dibrugarh unit, accused the BJP government of attempting to divide the tea community and demanded a swift resolution to the issue before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He warned of a community-wide boycott of the BJP if the matter remains unresolved.
Mantush Kurmi, district general secretary of the ACCJM’s unit, expressed bewilderment at the government’s decision to withhold caste certificates from the 30 sub-groups, emphasizing the need for transparency and equity in the administration’s actions.
The denial of caste certificates has had a tangible impact on the daily lives of the affected individuals, particularly when it comes to education. Students belonging to the deprived sub-groups face numerous hurdles during school and college admissions, exacerbating the existing inequalities within the tea community.
The upheaval caused by the denial of caste certificates not only affects the tea community but also raises broader concerns about social justice and inclusivity in Assam. The government’s action has been met with widespread criticism and calls for immediate resolution.
As the protest in Dibrugarh continues, it serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities and highlights the need for governmental action to address their grievances. The protesters are determined to fight for their rights and secure equal opportunities and recognition for all sub-groups within the tea community.
The state government must now respond to the demands put forth by the ACJJM and ensure that the denial of caste certificates is promptly rectified. In doing so, the government can embrace a more inclusive and equitable approach, empowering the disenfranchised sub-groups within the tea community and fostering social cohesion in Assam.
