India’s Tata Steel has signed a deal with Germany’s SMS group to collaborate on a technology that aims to reduce carbon emissions from the steel-making process by over 50%. The steel industry is responsible for up to 9% of global carbon emissions, making it a major polluter. The two companies plan to hold technical discussions and demonstrate the decarbonisation technology in Tata’s Jamshedpur plant in eastern India. The objective is to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50% from the blast furnace’s baseline operation. Tata Steel has set a goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. The technology could assist steel producers worldwide in cutting their share of pollution.
