Title: Tata Memorial Centre Expands Project to Improve Access to Affordable Cancer Care in Maharashtra
Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and the Public Health Department of Maharashtra have collaborated on a significant initiative called Access to Affordable Cancer Care for One and All. The project’s aim is to enhance accessibility and affordability of cancer care, particularly at the district level, while also reducing the prevalence of preventable forms of cancer.
Launched as a pilot project in June 2016 across six districts of Maharashtra, the initiative has now entered its second phase after a successful initial rollout. The expansion announcement was made on July 31 during the World Head and Neck Cancer Day week at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Parel.
To mark this occasion, an interim project report was unveiled, and the launch of Maharashtra Oral Cancer Warriors (MCWs) took place. MCWs is a group of dedicated oncologists who are alumni of TMH and have voluntarily come forward to offer free services in medical and surgical oncology at District Civil Hospitals. This move will boost oral cancer services at the district level and promote comprehensive care.
Dr. Rajendra Badwe, the Director of TMC, commended the Public Health Department of Maharashtra for their diligent efforts in cancer prevention and capacity building for early detection, screening, and prevention of common cancers. Dr. Badwe emphasized the importance of establishing cancer day care centers at district civil hospitals throughout Maharashtra to ensure cancer care is accessible and affordable for all.
