Tampa Bay Rays Ace Shane McClanahan to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Out for 2023 and Potentially 2024
TAMPA, Fla. — Shane McClanahan, the ace of the Tampa Bay Rays, will be undergoing Tommy John surgery, announced Rays manager Kevin Cash. This unfortunate news means that McClanahan will miss the remainder of the 2023 season and potentially the entire 2024 season.
McClanahan’s injury troubles became apparent when he was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 4 due to an injured left forearm. His last start, just two days before being sidelined, saw him give up five earned runs and two home runs against the New York Yankees. It was evident that something wasn’t right. Cash subsequently shared that it was highly unlikely McClanahan would return to the mound for the remainder of the season.
The young pitcher had a strong start to the season, presenting an impressive 8-0 record and a 2.07 ERA in his first 11 starts. Drafted by the Rays in 2018 from the University of South Florida, McClanahan made his debut in the 2020 season.
