The Tamil Nadu government has taken a proactive step to address the soaring prices of tomatoes by selling them at affordable rates in state-owned outlets. With tomato prices reaching alarming levels, the government has decided to sell the vegetable at the ‘Pasumai Pannai’ (green farm) outlets across Tamil Nadu for Rs 60 per kilogram.
In a bid to ensure that consumers have access to tomatoes at reasonable prices, Tamil Nadu Cooperation Minister K.R.Periyakaruppan has urged the public to purchase tomatoes from the TUCS-run Pannai Pasumai stores. These outlets are offering tomatoes at the affordable rate of Rs 60 per kilogram.
The move comes after Chief Minister M.K.Stalin expressed concern over the high prices of tomatoes and directed the department to take necessary action to ensure their availability at procurement price. In response, a total of 64 Pannai Pasumai outlets and three mobile shops in the state are currently selling tomatoes at the more affordable rate.
Explaining the reason behind the surge in tomato prices, Minister K.R.Periyakaruppan highlighted the impact of the unusually high number of hot days during the summer season, which has led to a decrease in availability. He stated that the Koyambedu wholesale market, which is a major supplier of tomatoes, has been receiving only 300 tonnes of tomatoes since last week, significantly lower than the daily requirement of 800 tonnes.
To address the issue, Minister K.R.Periyakaruppan assured the public that if the prices do not come down soon, tomatoes will be made available at the 35,000 fair price shops located across the state.
By taking this initiative, the Tamil Nadu government aims to provide relief to consumers who have been burdened by the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes. The decision to sell tomatoes at affordable rates in state-owned outlets will not only make them more accessible to the public but also help stabilize the market by ensuring a steady demand.
It is crucial to note that this move by the Tamil Nadu government demonstrates its commitment to addressing the rising cost of essential vegetables. By providing tomatoes at reasonable prices, the government is making a significant contribution towards ensuring food security and affordability for its citizens.
In conclusion, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to sell tomatoes at affordable rates in state-owned outlets to tackle the alarming increase in prices. With tomatoes being an essential ingredient in daily meals, this step will provide much-needed relief to consumers and ensure their accessibility at reasonable prices. The move reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the rising cost of essential vegetables and promoting food security for the people of Tamil Nadu.
